RESCUE CREWS UNABLE TO SAVE DOG THAT FELL INTO MINE


Rescue personnel from all over the county descended on the Brooklyn Mine district east of Twentynine Palms Tuesday morning in an attempt to rescue a dog that had fallen down a mine shaft. The dog’s owner said he was out with his dog Sunday when the dog fell down the mine shaft. County Fire Battalion Chief Bob Evans said Urban Search and Rescue crews who are trained in those types of rescues met the dog’s owner at Highway 62 and Gold Crown Road about 8:30 a.m., and he brought them to the mine. After assessing the 300-foot mine, and the fact that the dog had been there since Sunday, rescuers determined an attempt to retrieve the dog was a lost cause. Evans reminds residents that abandoned mine sites can pose many safety hazards and to stay away. ....
