To say that there’s more than meets the eye when observing the artwork of
Baseera Khan would be an understatement. Deep within the materials Khan uses in multidisciplinary projects are both inner explorations and experiences with and within a complex world.
“I think about material and its production and infrastructure and how it influences economies,” said Khan, who is the current artist-in-residence at
Lux Art Institute in Encinitas and whose works are on exhibit there through June 5. Khan said of the creative process: “I think about some geopolitical things, some historical timelines, and then I hone in on the material based on how it actually creates identity.”

Grand Promenade walkabout Monday
The Imagine Carlsbad team will host a Carlsbad Village walkabout with a Q&A starting at 6 p.m. Monday focusing on the Grand Promenade and Grand Street Tunnel. Meet Gary Nessim and Bob Wilkinson on the corner of State and Grand to review plans for a village gathering space called the Grand Promenade and proposed Grand Avenue tunnel under the Interstate 5 freeway to Pio Pico. Print Jonah Gercke grew up in a theatrical family, where both of his parents run local theater companies: Francis Gercke of Backyard Renaissance in San Diego and Kristianne Kurner of New Village Arts in Carlsbad.
But for the 22-year-old Gercke, who uses the pronouns they/them/theirs, film was always their first and only passion. At age 9, they could recite from memory the weekly film national box office tallies. And after graduating from high school in Carlsbad, they filmed a documentary on teen relations in Israel and the West Bank that earned the budding filmmaker a 2018 Genius grant from OZY Magazine.
