'It might wear off but I'm happy': The woman who sleeps in a Wellington bus shelter

Researchers have found members of the homeless population, especially those from communities that were marginalised, often had “low institutional trust” in governmental services due to their encounters.
Bongers experience with social housing in Blenheim was no different and that was what led her to Wellington.
Following a brief stint in Picton, Bongers arrived in Wellington three weeks ago.
Along the way, she got herself a bike, clothes, a thermos and a hot water bottle.
Locals have chipped in too, with some visiting her in the evenings, dropping off food and filling her hot water bottle with warm water.

Tania Thompson, a tenant at Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust premises, says she looks forward to coming home.
Sitting on the floor of her room, Tania Thompson says she has been working on an art piece for her bedroom wall.
The 58-year-old is fond of recycling and often sees the worth in what others have thrown away. The piece she is weaving comes from discarded thin, wooden planks she found around central Wellington. It’s been a while since Thompson had a place to call home, which she could decorate how she liked.
For the past two years, Thompson has been couch-surfing, living in her cousin’s shed and on the streets of central Wellington. She’s one of 41,000 people who are homeless in New Zealand. This figure included people who were living out of cars and in garages. ....

'Not heterosexual' renters twice as likely to have tenancies ended, says new research

Telfar-Barnard’s research drilled down into the most recent General Social Survey, a biannual survey of 8000 people by Stats NZ. In 2018, the survey included a special focus on issues related to housing and asked respondents why they left their last tenancy, with one option being “the landlord ended the tenancy”.
“The main takeaway from the study is that pretty much all tenants are living in precarious tenure,” Telfar-Barnard said. “They can’t be sure their landlord won’t give them notice tomorrow; that they won’t have to move out in three months time.”
Telfar-Barnard combined answers to the survey question with demographic information, including the sexuality of respondents. Survey respondents were selected to reflect the general population, and therefore the proportion of respondents who identified as “not heterosexual” would reflect the population at large. ....
