SC asks broadcasters to suggest mechanism to bring discipline in news channels

The Supreme Court wants to strengthen the self-regulatory mechanism for news channels to bring discipline while protecting freedom of speech and expression. The court has asked the two representative bodies of news channels to make suggestions and posted the matter for hearing in four weeks. The court s order came on a petition filed by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) against a decision of the Bombay High Court. The NBA s self-regulatory authority, the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), has been found to be ineffective.
