BRATTLEBORO â The design of 1890s-era grange halls throughout New England typically followed the same plan â kitchen and dining area on the ground level and small gem of an auditorium upstairs. Guilfordâs Broad Brook Grange #151 was no different, and the townspeople of Guilford have been climbing the stairs for community events for over a hundred years.
Broad Brook Community Center, Inc. (BBCC) purchased the Grange in 2018, with big plans to improve and update the hall for new generations of Guilfordites and area friends and neighbors. The project is now in its final round of construction, and although there are many moving parts to this undertaking, installing a lift to the second floor (also required by code) is by far the most anticipated.

GUILFORD â Broad Brook Grange is launching a fundraiser to help its host facility, Broad Brook Community Center, which is raising funds for the upcoming Phase 2 of its renovation of the historic grange hall.
One of the most costly items in the project is an âAnsulâ kitchen exhaust system, which will cost more than $60,000. State regulations require such an exhaust system for any sort of cooking beyond âwarming.â
The Grange has pledged to raise $10,000 to help with this expense, and is starting the campaign with a Grange donation of $1,000.
The Grange is known in the community for its series of annual public meals: The Sugar on Snow Supper, the Motherâs and Fatherâs Day Brunches, and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. All of these events require intensive use of the kitchen cooking range.

GUILFORD â Broad Brook Community Center is launching a winter fund drive to support the major phase of renovations this spring. Thanks to a matching gift challenge, all donations received by January 31, 2021, will be doubled.
The BBCC purchased the 1896 building from Broad Brook Grange three years ago, began raising funds for a complete renovation, and completed the first phase of work in 2018. The improvements particularly addressed accessibility and safety, and included a new entry ramp, ADA-compliant restrooms, and a fire escape.
The second and major phase of renovation, which will begin in March 2021, includes the addition of a full basement, full weatherization, a sprinkler system, and a lift to the second floor auditorium. Local contractor Mathes Hulme Builders is in charge of the renovation, working with plans created by architect Jon Saccoccio and site plans by Stevens Associates.
