As Governor of New Zealand in the mid 19th century, Grey led Aotearoa into the largest conflicts of the New Zealand Wars. 
After his two terms as Governor ended, he became a political giant who influenced an entire generation of future leaders. He also played a huge role in the history of South Australia and South Africa.
For decades his nickname was “Good Governor Grey”. A reference to his reputation as an enlightened humanitarian, a champion of liberalism, and a defender of indigenous rights.
Today, his name graces everything from Greymouth to Grey Lynn. 
But that legacy is deeply tainted. Over the last few decades Grey’s reputation has been re-examined by historians. He has been labelled an arch-villain of colonisation. A man who lied and schemed to undermine Māori self-determination.  ....
