What Is White Privilege, and How Does It Affect Health?


The idea of white privilege isn t new. In the 1930s, W.E.B. Du Bois, an American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist, described the public and psychological wage that allowed poor white people to feel superior to poor Black people. In the late 1980s, Wellesley scholar Peggy McIntosh listed 50 examples of white privilege in an essay, covering everything from how white people have access to better housing, health care, and education because of the color of their skin.
Since George Floyd s death at the hands of a white police officer in May 2020, and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic laid bare the health care disparities between white and Black Americans, white privilege has become an integral part of a wider conversation. ....

The police killings of Black people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others this year have sparked a movement unlike any in recent memory, as calls to defund the police and dismantle white supremacy have moved into the mainstream. 
But even as state and local governments in New York, Minneapolis and Louisville change how they police Black communities, many voices say it’s 
white people who need to make change on an individual level. And that change needs to begin at home, with white children.
We know beginning this conversation can be difficult, but it is essential. To help break down the basics of how parents can to start talking about race with their white children, we’re joined by Jennifer Harvey, a professor of religion at Drake University who’s written a book called “Raising White Kids: Bringing up Children in a Racially Unjust America;” Chandra White-Cummings, an activist and lawyer who recently penned this op-ed in the  ....
