iStock/ Easylight Two men will appear in court in Barberton, Mpumalanga, for allegedly killing a taxi owner Andrew Mwali. One of them is a prison guard. Investigations are continuing in a separate case of attempted murder where another taxi owner was targeted in the same area in what police believe is an ongoing taxi feud. The suspects will appear in court again on Tuesday. Police in Mpumalanga have arrested two men, one of them a correctional officer, in connection with the murder of a taxi boss in Barberton. According to the police, Andrew Mwali, 34, was gunned down by an armed man last week after he alighted from his Toyota Quantum at the home of a mechanic. The gunman fled the scene.

PHOTO: iStock A Mpumalanga man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the mother of his four children.  Lucky Alfred Mhlanga, 34, appeared in the Mpumalanga High Court, which was sitting in Breyten, on Thursday, where he was sentenced for the February 2020 murder of Zinhle Happiness Nkabinde, 28, after he pleaded guilty on Wednesday exactly a year after Nkabinde was reported missing.  Her body was discovered in bush on a farm near Mahamba five days after the domestic worker had been reported missing when she did not show up for work. The court heard how Nkabinde was physically abused by Mhlanga repeatedly to a point where she sought solace from authorities by applying for a protection order against the violent father of her children.

Three adults and two children have drowned in four incidents since 19 January. The youngest victim was a 1-year-old child who drowned in a ditch while playing. Five people have drowned in Mpumalanga in the past 10 days, prompting authorities to warn the public to stay away from rivers and dams. One of the victims was a 1-year-old, who drowned in a ditch.  Tropical Cyclone Eloise, which reached South Africa on Sunday, brought heavy rain and flooding.
