Firefighters from Ottawa and North Grenville doused a grass fire that was spreading towards Highway 416 near the Rideau River on Friday afternoon, forcing the Ontario Provincial Police to briefly close the highway.
A passing motorist called 911 at 12:55 p.m. to report the fire just north of the Rideau River, Ottawa Fire Services said in a release.

“What started as a campfire in a resident’s yard grew out of control when the wind picked up pushing the fire across the dry grass,” OFS said. “The fire entered the wooded strip dividing two fields before jumping over a small creek and rapidly spreading towards the highway.
