Under the sunshine at Aspen Highlands, U.S. Alpine Ski Team athlete and 2021 World Junior Slalom Champion Ben Ritchie emerged victorious at the slalom kickoff of the U.S. Alpine Championships. Middlebury College’s Erik Arvidsson was second, and Garret Driller rounded out the podium in third.
Due to the forecasted warm weather, organizers made the decision to move the program up, with an early 7:30 a.m. first run start. The decision proved to be a good move, as the sun burned through the clouds at the end of the second run, roasting the surface. The course crew did a great job with the conditions considering the temperatures, and the surface was surprisingly solid and skiable. ....

Carbondale ski wax maker dives into the Shark Tank

Peter Arlein wasn’t quite sure what to make of the email he got about this time last year asking if he wanted to pitch his Carbondale-based eco-friendly ski wax company on ABC’s Shark Tank.
After all, he didn’t figure there were many avid skiers among the panel of celebrity investors, known as “sharks,” on the popular entrepreneurial-themed reality TV show, or even among its viewers.
“When I saw the email, I didn’t even think it was real,” Arlein said.
Sure enough, when he replied he learned that mountainFLOW Eco-wax had been discovered by some Shark Tank talent scouts at the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Denver, and they wanted him to come on the show. ....
