Two generations of St. Vincent nurses mark anniversary of first strike against Tenet Healthcare
WORCESTER – More than two decades ago, Deb Bryn, like her nursing co-workers, was unhappy with St. Vincent Hospital management. She joined them on the picket line.
“Unfortunately 21 years later, I’m here with my daughter,” Bryn said Wednesday, joining nurses - many on their first strike, others on their second - to mark the 21st anniversary of the start of a strike against Tenet Healthcare.
The strike began on March 31, 2000, and ended six weeks later.
“While we are disheartened that Tenet has chosen once again to waste millions of dollars to force a strike at our hospital, we are awe-inspired by our new generation of SVH nurses who have once again taken the courageous step to stand up for the safety of our patients at all costs, said nurse Marlena Pellegrino, who participated in the 2000 strike and is now a leader of the latest one.
