Apr. 3 It was an unpleasant surprise for Jennifer Yick when the Bank of America debit card holding her unemployment benefits was declined by a store. The San Francisco resident knew she had more than $400 in the account.
She logged into the bank website and saw four hefty DoorDash charges even though she has never used the food delivery service.
“I felt sucker-punched,” she said. “They just drained it.”
Then she embarked on a lengthy quest “the tale of unending phone calls, hours on hold,” she said to contact Bank of America about the theft. ....

California lost $11 billion to fraudulent unemployment claims, state officials say

California officials said the state had sent out fraudulent unemployment benefits amounting to $11 billion. The
California Employment Development Department (EDD) said it had processed almost 20 million claims since the onset of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. An estimated 10 percent of these claims had been confirmed as fraudulent ones while an additional 17 percent are still being investigated for suspected fraud.
In a Jan. 25 press release, the EDD reported that unemployment claims it processed from March 2020 to January of this year has totaled $114 billion.
According to the press release, the amount of claims EDD processed during the first eight weeks of the pandemic equaled the total claims it processed during the whole of 2010. Driven by the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, California processed a record amount of unemployment benefit claims under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. ....

Bank of America (BofA) pointed out potential unemployment benefits fraud in California, spread out across 640,000 accounts with suspicious activity. A BofA official said red flags they found include claims filed in the names of infants, children and centenarians, along with individuals living in other states. The bank called for an investigation of the fraudulent scheme amounting to $2 billion, “the highest estimate … since the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a wave of joblessness.”
BofA Senior Vice President for State Government Relations Brian Putler wrote in a Dec. 7 letter to legislators that the bank arrived at the estimate after working with the California ....
