New investments from federal and state authorities will enable OHSU to ramp up the state s ability to continuously track virus variants across Oregon and Southwest Washington. (OHSU)
Federal and state health authorities are making new investments in Oregon Health & Science University’s research and clinical laboratory expertise to substantially enhance its ability to track COVID-19 across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
As the pandemic slowly recedes with vaccinations rising across the region, OHSU scientists will continuously monitor how the novel coronavirus spreads and potentially evolves. The goal is to quickly recognize the emergence of genetic variants that may be more contagious, deadly or evade existing vaccines. ....

Reinfections of COVID-19 after natural infection or vaccination
On April 5, Bridge Michigan reported that 246 fully vaccinated people in Michigan were later infected with the coronavirus, including 11 hospitalized and three who died. A spokesperson from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) was quoted by Bridge Michigan a week later that the deaths have since undergone a more “detailed review,” and all three had histories of earlier infections before vaccination. Moreover, neither COVID-19 nor any “other acute respiratory infection” was identified on the trio’s death certificates.
