this is the heart of maryland s power grid. the control center manages to get power to your house so you can plug in the window unit. it s connected together and generation is shared across that area. so the whole side of the country is not experiencing what we are today. on one side of the room they control the actual transmission of power. on other they keep tabs which includes responding to outages. they don t anticipate problems with power. it s because there s ample supply to met that load but that doesn t mean you waste power. what customers can do today is what they would could to do to control the seize of your bill, shifting the usage away from the peak our and shifting away from appliances that generate heat. for example, today would be a good day not to cook a ham in the oven. it s just going to heat up your house and your air conditioner will work twice as hard. it will cycle through the peak rewards program to keep that balance. it s a shakeout cr ....

100 degrees, bge said they may have to implement a voluntary program. last year it caused some heat of its own. reporter: if the heat s building outside, your ac is struggling to cool you off inside and it shuts down, leaving you to sweat it out. it happened last year to almost 400,000 bge customers who were surprised by what they had signed up for. with the sun beating down and the temperature on the rise a heat advisory reminded some customers of the triple conditions last year when the utility kicked in the peak rewards program. i think it was a day, day and a half and it kicked back on again and it was fine. we didn t have complaints after that. reporter: this pays customers up to $200 to shut down their air conditioner in cycles during times that the electric grid is being taxed the most. last year it came with little or no warning. we have about an hour to execute the warning, so it s a real quick thing. oar rob dwiewld a spokesman for bge said the utili ....
