Working with Mother Nature: Crop diversity, rotational grazing improve production


When Kaleb Anderson took over the family farm in Goodhue County, he didn’t just inherit the land, he inherited a strong conservation ethic. His grandfather purchased the farm 75 years ago. The farm was rundown, so his grandfather began some of the earlier conservation efforts in the area by changing to contour cropping. Anderson’s father pushed conservation further by removing much of the chemical use on the farm, and now Anderson is adding more steps to regenerate the land.
“In a traditional approach to agriculture, we try to force our will onto Mother Nature to achieve whatever goal you are trying to accomplish,” Anderson said. “With regenerative agriculture, we try to work with Mother Nature. It’s a mindset change. You have to be willing to accept a little bit of the chaos that occurs, because I don’t think we fully understand how complex our soils are. ” ....

Senate Republicans have blocked the omnibus environment bill, determined to stop Minnesota from following California s lead in tightening tailpipe emissions standards and requiring automakers to send more electric vehicles to the state for sale.
That package of environmental legislation sets the budgets for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the state Board of Water and Soil Resources, as well as other institutions already bleeding heavily from COVID-19 revenue losses, such as the Minnesota Zoo and the Science Museum of Minnesota. ....

Car dealers complain that they shouldn t have to stock electric and plug-in hybrid cars for which they say there is no demand. A year ago, when we needed to buy a new car, we decided on a Toyota Prius Prime. After searching on the web, I discovered there was exactly one in stock anywhere in the Twin Cities. Fortunately, it was just what I wanted, and we bought it. While I got the car I wanted, it would have been nice to have some choices. And anyone else looking at that time missed out. ....
