Government coming up at the end of the month. will we find another compromise? i m not sure. brian: the president has been going around but not with republicans. he wants to get together on some type of compromise, maybe lesson, give some control over on some of these cuts which is 2.4% on the budget. but he also wants them to get together on march 27, which is the day the debt ceiling either goes up or we the government stops. so they come up with some type of deal to kick it till september 30. on top of all that, i think it is going to be really important for these sides to get together on one thing, and that is a budget. the house has got a budget due. the senate s got a budget due. and the president s got a budget due. can they go back to the process they used to have of calling each other crazy but then going into a room and working it out? ....

The president wants to raise taxes and keep spending as is. that s very different from the republican side which says enough with the tax increases. get on with serious spending cuts. they are very, very far apart. gretchen: republicans were on the record yesterday we played at the top of the hour saying we re willing to increase revenue by reducing some of these tax loopholes if if we talk about the big spending issues like entitlements. steve: and tax reform. they are edging towards some kind of compromise way down the road because they have to. brian: here is gene sperling, white house economic advisor, on what went into the sequester and what the thought process was. this is not a win for republicans. republicans are supposed to be for stronger national defense. this cuts our military preparedness dramatically. they re supposed to be for border security. these sequester cuts will end up meeting enough reduction in hours it will be the equivalent of 5,000 border patro ....
Actually lower rates. i think none of that s been in this discussion. so absolutely i think we need to do a big agreement for the country, because we haven t dealt with the fundamental drivers of our debt: the entitlement programs. gretchen: they don t sound so unreasonable? i had to read those sound bites verbatim a couple of extra times this morning to make sure i was hearing republicans saying this. we don t need to raise taxes to fund the government. we need to raise taxes to get our nation out of debt. that sounds like compromise to me. that sounds like a position that republicans don t like, which is raising taxes, but saying, hey, we d be willing to do this if in fact the other side also comes to the table and talks about the big issues, the big elephant in the room yes, another e word entitlements which so far have been given the complete brushoff. brian: the key is the entitlements but not saying cut medicare and medicaid. i think it s the wrong language. i think the rig ....
