Catching Up With John Means

By Tessa Sayers
1:12 PM EDT
Through his first eight games this season, John Means is off to one of the best starts in Orioles’ history. Earlier this month, he threw the fourth individual no-hitter in franchise history and the first in more than 50 years, when he blanked the Mariners on May 5 at T-Mobile Park.
Means’ 1.21 ERA through his first eight starts is the second-lowest by an O’s starter during that span, trailing only Hoyt Wilhelm (0.91 ERA in 1959). After another scoreless start on Tuesday, Means, the reigning AL Player of the Week, ranks second among all Major League pitchers in WHIP (0.71), ERA (1.21), and inning pitched (52.0). His opponents’ average .152 is the sixth lowest. ....

Many familiar voices to those who watch Baltimore Orioles games on TV will no longer be heard on MASN.
Lead play-by-play announcer Gary Thorne, along with Mike Bordick, Jim Hunter, Rick Dempsey, Tom Davis and Dave Johnson have reportedly been dropped by the channel in a massive layoff and cost-cutting maneuver.
In addition, pregame and postgame shows for both the Orioles and Washington Nationals, who share the network, are being cut.
The 72-year-old Thorne had lead the O s game broadcasts since 2007. He did not appear in any broadcasts during the 2020 season due to the pandemic and a contract dispute. I missed not being there. We had a contract disagreement that we had to get taken care of, and it wasn t done until after the season had started, and then with the pandemic and the change in schedules, the Orioles had the right under our deal not to use me if they didn t want to, and the decision was not to. ....

Crowdsourcing MLB Radio Broadcasters, Part 1: The East

January 6, 2021
Over the course of this offseason, FanGraphs is compiling a crowdsourced ranking of our readers’ favorite broadcasts. Last month, we announced the results of the crowdsourced vote on TV broadcasts. Now we are once again asking for your help, this time for each team’s radio broadcast.
The radio broadcasts will follow the same general format as our earlier TV broadcast surveys. When you peruse the section for your team or teams of choice, you will find a link to a poll. That poll covers three categories, as well as an overall ranking. In addition, there is a separate space for any additional comments you would like to make. The eventual ranking of radio teams will be quantitative, but I will include relevant comments from this section in my writing of those rankings. ....

Recapping Winter Meetings Week In Birdland

By Liam Davis
December 12, 2020
Each year, the Winter Meetings is one of the most exciting weeks of the MLB offseason. The hot stove is heating up, the winter holidays and a new year are just around the corner, and Spring Training is only a couple of months away.
Despite taking place virtually, this year’s Winter Meetings were no different. Throughout the week, the Orioles’ Baseball Operations department was hard at work, doing everything from attending virtual meetings with executives from other clubs to fortifying the farm system, and even adding some talent at the Major League level through the annual Rule 5 Draft. ....
