Rendezvous general manager Keith Treggiden Restaurant and pub bosses in Dorset will miss the “buzz” and financial boost of Christmas parties this year – as the county’s Tier 2 restrictions have effectively cancelled them. In normal times, the weekend before Christmas, is the most popular period for work and social Christmas parties. It is one of the busiest periods during the year for the hospitality industry, but this year, things are drastically different. Dorset, including both Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council areas, will remain in Tier 2 after a Government review, meaning Christmas parties cannot feasibly happen. There was some hope that the county would be moved into Tier 1 restrictions, which allow indoor and outdoor mixing between different households, and provide a boost to struggling hospitality businesses. ....

While coronavirus cases had fallen in Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council areas, Public Health Dorset explained they haven’t fallen enough and Dorset hospitals remain “under pressure” with coronavirus patients. A move into Tier 1 would have provided a boost to struggling hospitality businesses, as rules allow indoor and outdoor mixing between different households and the ‘rule of six’. Craig Oakes, president of Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce, said it was “sadly” the right decision for Dorset to remain in Tier 2 because the county’s hospitals may not able to cope with a sharp influx of Covid-19 patients. ....

RESTAURANT and pub bosses in Dorset have spoken of the devastation businesses would suffer by the county staying in Tier 2 Covid regulations - with fears raised that some would remain shut forever. Both Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council areas were placed in Tier 2 level by the Government at the end of the second lockdown in early December, and have been waiting anxiously for today s announcement on any Tier movements. South Dorset MP Richard Drax has long been outspoken on the appalling impact of restrictions, and West Dorset MP Chris Loder made a passionate case in Parliament for the county to be moved to Tier 1, given cases in Dorset have “considerably reduced”. ....
