BLM launches Survival Fund with $1,000 grants

NEW YORK The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is formally expanding a $3 million financial relief fund that it quietly launched earlier this month, to help people struggling to make ends meet during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The foundation, which grew out of the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement nearly eight years ago, said Thursday that it plans to make up to 3,000 microgrants of $1,000 each to people who it believes need it most. The BLM foundation has already begun asking recipients to apply for the Survival Fund grants as it builds out its philanthropic arm.
If approved, the money is deposited directly into recipients bank accounts or made available on prepaid debit cards, the foundation said no strings attached. ....

Minneapolis cops can't deactivate bodycams on scene, new policy says

This update helps leadership provide a more complete and accurate picture during and after incidents and puts officers in a better position to hold each other accountable, Frey said Monday.
Several other police policies were changed after George Floyd s death. Floyd died in May after police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes as Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. His death sparked nationwide racial justice protests.
Minneapolis police banned chokeholds and are required to announce their presence before carrying out a no-knock warrant, except in certain circumstances. The department overhauled its use-of-force policy to require officers to consider all reasonable alternatives before engaging in deadly force. Officers are required to use the least amount of force necessary. An assistant city attorney will be embedded to advise on misconduct investigations. ....

Black Lives Matter nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by Norwegian MP

Black Lives Matter has been nominated for a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
Norwegian member of parliament Petter Eide said he nominated the organization because it is  bringing forward a new consciousness and awareness about racial justice.
To carry forward a movement of racial justice and to spread that to other countries is very, very important. Black Lives Matter is the strongest force today doing this, not only in the U.S. but also in Europe and in Asia, Eide told USA TODAY on Saturday.
Eide said Black Lives Matter carries forward the legacy of earlier racial justice movements, such as the civil rights movement in the U.S. and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Martin Luther King Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and Albert Luthuli and Nelson Mandela won the prize in 1960 and 1993, respectively, for their campaigns against racial discrimination in South Africa. ....

Black Texas family says cars set on fire, house damaged over BLM sign

Police in Texas and the FBI are investigating after a Black family awoke to find their vehicles on fire and Trump 20 spray painted on the garage last week.
Jayla Gipson and Charles Crawford told local media they believe the incident was brought on by a Black Lives Matter sign they put in their yard around Thanksgiving that was defaced with red paint.
“That sign was in my yard for less than two weeks and then all of a sudden we get a tragedy like this,” Gipson told WFAA.
Gipson told NBC News her 21-year-old son noticed the fire around midnight on Dec. 9 and woke the rest of the family who were able to leave unharmed. She said her 12-year-old daughter was asleep in her room right next to the garage where the cars were burning. ....
