The problem is obviously we live in this immediacy world, right? we want information right away. all of the press folks at fort hood on r. on trying. don t. we haven t been notified so you can can imagine every news outlet around the world is literally blowing up their telephones and their email accounts trying to get the latest information. that s why they just have sent out this very brief description that there has been a shooting at fort hood and injuries are reported. emergency crews on the scene. no further details are known at this time. that is the extent of what has come from the public affairs department at fort hood. they are very very busy and, clearly, us reporters and journalists are all wanting answers. but they have to assess the situation themselves. they have to make sure that everyone is safe and then they are able to kind of get that information out to us. so, i know it s tough when we are in these breaking ....

It was also a story that went for maybe a day and a half. and then this story, shots outside the capitol, half a day. right? sort of a half a day. the boston marathon coverage went on for about two weeks solid. now it s nothing. is it because there was a political debate surrounding the boston bombing, the question how the am bos were obtained and there was a ungun-control question and her we had what turned out to be a mentally disturbed woman who snapped apparently? no, i don t think there were enough facts for the media to make a mistake on. you move on. this thing marks me as very old-fashioned. i still feel like in these breaking-news situations, if anchors and correspondents waited for confirmation, they would get fewer things wrong. they didn t have a gun. it didn t come until 6:00 at night. this happened at 3:00. what are people supposed to do between 3:00 and 6:00? they ve got 24 hours of news coverage. you know what this is? who gets it first? who cares? the pub ....

Together. and we re being told she is alive in critical condition and lone gunman said to have been shot by a security officer on the scene and tackled we were told by an eyewitness by someone in a crowd of 100 or more people who came out to see the congress woman. reports from arizona and npr were that congress woman giffords had been shot and killed and now fox is confirming a source is saying she is still alive. she is at the hospital and she is in critical condition. now, i can explain from covering a number of these breaking news situations, especially one as serious as this, with a gunman who fires off from what we re harg as many as 15 shots, that people are very focused on attending to the injured, preserving evidence and making sure that the investigation is ongoing and that all information is contained and gathered in the event that this event extends ....
