SOMERSET For generations, May has been a time for First Communions, devotions to Mary and other traditions in the Catholic church. As the area emerges from the pandemic, COVID has changed but not eliminated these and other festivities.
At St. John of God Church in Somerset, 28 children received the Eucharist for the first time on May 2. In order to accommodate families while ensure social distancing, two Masses were held, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
“This is another joyous occasion of celebration for the parish of St. John of God continuing to live parish life as normal as possible following safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID,” said the Rev. Jason Brilhante, parish administrator. ....

Portuguese, Cape Verdean food at new downtown Fall River restaurant

FALL RIVER Yet another downtown restaurant and bar is scheduled to open soon.
The news comes less than two weeks since the new owner of the Cultural Center building on South Main Street gave details to the Herald News about his own European-style restaurant that had just opened for business.
The Cultural Center is located between Borden Place West apartments and Rite Aid Pharmacy at the corner of Spring and South Main streets.
The Besse System building, named for a popular clothing chain during the first half of the 20th century, sits at the southerly corner of Spring and South Main streets and contains the former Adagio Piano Lounge. ....

Police investigate two overnight shootings in Long Beach; no injuries reported • Long Beach Post News

On Saturday night at around 5:34 p.m., police said they responded to the area of Willow Street near Baltic Avenue in West Long Beach regarding a report of gunshots. Several hours later on Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m., officers responded to the area of Brayton Avenue near 65th Street in North Long Beach after receiving another report of shots fired.
In both incidents, upon arrival, officers were unable to locate a victim but did locate evidence of a shooting, they said.
No motive has been identified at this time.

Man wounded in North Long Beach shooting Friday night • Long Beach Post News

At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers were sent to the 5800 block of Brayton Avenue in North Long Beach after police received a call about a shooting.
At the scene, officers located a man with a gunshot wound to the lower body, according to police. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
Officers are still not clear what prompted the shooting. According to the victim, an unknown man approached him and shot at him, police said. The suspect fled the scene before officers could get there, according to the LBPD.
Gang detectives were on the scene of the investigation, police said. ....

Bedding manufacturer in Fall River relocating into former Sam's Club

FALL RIVER – David Nguyen says he’s been courted by no less than the governor of South Carolina to move his US Bedding manufacturing plant out of Fall River.
“They have a lower tax rate and cheaper materials,” he said, referring to South Carolina’s selling points.
But Nguyen says he’s developed a fondness for Fall River and its people since 2006, when he relocated his business to the Spindle City from Canton.
“I love it here. It’s a beautiful city,” Nguyen said.
Back then he bought an old mill building at 451 Quarry St. in the Flint. But as his business grew, Nguyen found himself running out of space. ....
