Timothy Bussey ‘14 MA, ‘18 Ph.D., grew up in a military family near the Fort Benning Army base in Georgia. After briefly considering enrolling in a military college, they attended a smaller state university in their hometown and then spent time abroad at the University of Oxford. Their undergraduate advisor was an alumna of UConn and shared information about UConn’s Rainbow Center. In the summer of 2020, UConn students made a pointed observation: the University had no single course devoted to the epidemic of anti-Black racism in the U.S.

The Christmas Day murder of a transgender woman has “shaken” the city’s transgender community, the head of a South Side, Black-led LGBTQ center said Wednesday.
Courtney Eshay Key was trying to make several changes in her life before her fatal shooting in Chatham, said LaSaia Wade, director of Brave Space Alliance.
“She was trying to better herself in particular ways and then this happened,” Wade said.
Key was shot in the head in the 900 block of East 82nd Street around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 25, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Officers found Key in the street where she was pronounced dead, police said. She was one of eight people killed in holiday weekend gun violence. ....
