CRICKET: United pulled the twenty20 final back from the brink to beat Freyberg and claim their fifth title in a row. United won the final by eight runs at Fitzherbert Park on Saturday, but had almost no right to do so after it looked like Freyberg were cruising home. United were unbeaten in the twenty20 competition. Batting first, United scored 135-7 and then Freyberg were 115-2 with 3.2 overs to go. But they lost two set batsmen and United put the heat on at the death, holding Freyberg to 127-5.
There is one more week of the twenty20 competition remaining.
CRICKET: Marist batsman Craig Lawrence put in the Manawatū club performance of the weekend, smashing a century in their 57-run win over Old Boys in the twenty20 competition. Lawrence raced to 100 not out from 56 balls, hitting eight fours and five sixes as Marist piled on 194-4 batting first at Ongley Park in Sunday. The win put Marist into fourth place with one round of matches remaining this weekend, but they are out of the running. There is one round at 12pm on Saturday, with the final at 3.30pm. Unbeaten United still lead the competition and have already qualified for the final. Freyberg are second and Palmerston North Boys High School are third, and they play each other in the final round in a virtual semifinal.
Palmerston. Palmerston scored 123-7 in the first dig with the experienced Jonathan Salmon scoring 39. Marist needed 11 off the last over to win and reached 124-8 with two balls to spare.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School climbed into third place with a 37-run win over
Old Boys. The schoolboys scored 126-5 batting first off the back of 35 from Scott Davidson and 24 from Jonty Fleck. Stephen Bennett snared two wickets for Old Boys. In reply none of the Old Boys batsmen fired and they were all out for 89 in the 17.4 overs. Bennett top scored at No 9 with 16. Aadesh Ganugapati, Fred McVerry and Jonty Fleck all took two wickets apiece for Boys’ High.
