When Lawrence Ferlinghetti died in February, for some it felt like the poet and City Lights Booksellers & Publishers co-founder took a piece of San Francisco with him.
Like the store, Ferlinghetti was a literary landmark, his presence in North Beach and around the city as much a given as the fog or cable car bells. While his death at age 101 was perhaps not surprising, the loss came with a kind of shock that this living institution would no longer be here.
In his century of life, Ferlinghetti was many things: San Francisco’s poet laureate, a book merchant, an activist, a visual artist and a neighbor. Memories shared by the community with The Chronicle and on social media reflect those multitudes. Here are a few tributes celebrating Ferlinghetti’s place in the city and his lasting impact on our culture. ....

Beyond the silk pyjamas: the style of Noël Coward

Last modified on Mon 28 Dec 2020 03.02 EST
Noël Coward was the epitome of style. Fittingly that is the subject of a major exhibition opening at London’s Guildhall Art Gallery, containing costumes, set designs, paintings and production photos. Brad Rosenstein, its curator, says Coward is “especially celebrated for his verbal wit” but that the exhibition “will remind us that his original productions were also visual feasts for their audiences”.
That sounds tempting – but it raises several questions. What, actually, do we mean by style? And how has it changed over the years? In Coward’s case, style consisted of the effortless projection of a unique personality. You see that clearly on an album cover of a 1955 LP, Noël Coward at Las Vegas, where he stands in the Nevada desert immaculately clad in dark suit and suede shoes while clutching a cup of tea. 'He did love his dressing gowns': Noël Coward's private life goes on display

Noël Coward knew just “how potent cheap music is”, as he says in his play
Private Lives, but he also understood the power of striking a pose. His sophisticated stage dialogue was always delivered in matching style.
Now admirers of this towering talent – he was acknowledged in his day as “the Master” – will have the chance to see glamorous costumes, designs and props, along with letters and photographs gathered from his long career. A rare collection goes on show in London next month and will feature two of the flamboyant dressing gowns he wore on stage.
“He did love his dressing gowns, at home, as well as when he performed,” said Alan Brodie, chair of the Noël Coward Foundation. “His sense of style was important to him and he was hugely influential, with friendships among the leading names in art and fashion, but he was also, of course, able to make fun of himself.” ....
