Area Reopens After Authorities Investigate Report of Suspicious Item in Boxborough

Local, state and federal authorities responded Saturday morning to a report of a suspicious device at a gas station in Boxborough, Massachusetts.
Boxborough police responded to the Gulf Station, located at 1425 Massachusetts Ave., around 12:35 p.m. for a suspicious item near a tree alongside the station, police said.
The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene.
Out of an abundance of caution, the immediate area around the station was evacuated, and traffic was temporarily diverted around the area. ....

Editor s note: In the final part of our series, we take a closer look at what the local police response to mental health issues has been like during the pandemic.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted all facets of life including mental health. Like local emergency room departments and private clinicians, local police departments have also seen a significant increase in mental health calls since March 2020.
Local police
Boxborough Police Chief Warren Ryder estimates a 30-40% increase in mental health-related calls during the pandemic compared with the previous year.
Maynard Police Chief Michael Noble said it is difficult to tally the exact number of mental health calls as they are called in and identified as several different incidents, perhaps as a disturbance, domestic dispute, or medical issue. The department s mental health referrals, however, are up 105% from the quarter before COVID.  ....

Boxborough residents concerned about Littleton Amazon plan's impact

It s worrisome having vans come around that corner, Nolde said. It s a very dangerous intersection. It s a blind corner.
Turning restrictions
The Littleton Select Board approved a host community agreement with proponents of the Last Mile Amazon facility, under construction at 151-153 Taylor St.
A last-mile facility delivers within a 45-mile radius. Amazon has grown its last-mile delivery efforts helping to speed up delivery times.
The Littleton Planning Board approved special permitting for the project. Many Boxborough residents, Nolde included, attended the Planning Board s virtual hearings. 
One condition of the host community agreement and the special permit is a left-turn restriction at the facility, allowing a right-hand turn only for local deliveries.  ....
