A Visual History of New York Told Through Its Diagrams, Maps and Graphics


Martin Pederson interviewed this week Antonis Antoniou and Steven Heller, author of
Decoding Manhattan, a new book that compiles over 250 architectural maps, diagrams, and graphics of the island of Manhattan in New York City, talking about the origin story of the book, the process of research, and the collaboration.
In a very real sense, the island of Manhattan is a place created by a diagram: The Commmissioner’s Plan of 1811, which laid out the future streets north of Houston Street and south of 155th Street, was essentially a map disguised as a planning document. The co-founder of the Society of American Archivist s Digital Design Records Taskforce, Aliza has written extensively on archival concerns and approaches for collections containing born-digital design files. As a resource to both designers and archivists alike, she s working to lower the barriers for engaging with digital design records and considering their impact. In an interview with ArchDaily, she discusses her inspirations and career at The Library, as well as trends in born-digital design records and digital literacy.
