Police have opened an inquest to investigate the death of the director of CMS Water Engineering, whose company was part of a joint venture in the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant tender.
Businesses in and around the Hartbeespoort Dam say the lack of management of hyacinth means companies are unable to operate businesses that are dependent on the dam, yet proposals to clean up the dam are being rejected.
The department awarded CMS Water Engineering a three-year tender valued at R4.6m in March last year at the Usutu Vaal Water Area near Standerton in Mpumalanga, according to department spokesperson Wisane Mavasa.
Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Judith Tshabalala, has assured residents in the Rustenburg Local Municipality, who are affected by sewer blockages and overflowing manholes, that their challenges will be resolved.
Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Judith Tshabalala visited Rustenburg Local Municipality in North West Province on Tuesday, 30 May 2023. The purpose of the Ministerial oversight visit was to assess the state, challenges and conceive possible solutions to the water and sanitation challenges in the Local Municipality. The Deputy Minister’s visit to the area was prompted by the fact that Rustenburg Local Municipality is experiencing drinking water supply challenges, which have resulted in intermittent supply and rationing of water supply as well as the failure of sewer network infrastructure causing the overflow of manholes. The latter is likely to cause pollution of water resources.
