Away from the border and take more away from that very sliver of land, small sliver of land, that amounts to ethnic cleansing. so, this war continues. every now and then, turkey push in with ground troops, but very regularly they will bomb areas, they will use their warplanes and they will use drones to bomb areas in northern iraq and northern syria. and is president erdogan using the fact that everybody s attention seems to be on ukraine to do this? well, the geopolitics of this are really interesting, because president erdogan has elections in turkey next year and he is going into them in a weaker position, frankly, than he has for a very long time. the turkish economy is in a terrible state, so for him, it shows strength. it s good with voters for him to be seen as being tough on terror, but he can t really do these things unilaterally. he needs to be given ....

They might be perhaps a little bit more relaxed when it comes to allowing president erdogan to do what he wants in northern syria and northern iraq. you ve just mentioned northern syria. there s fighting going on there, too, involving, what, turkey, russia, syria itself. you have areas that are held by the kurds, by the syrian democratic forces. you have rebel held areas in the west of syria. you have areas along the turkish border that are turkish controlled and turkish administered. you have iraqi kurdistan. you have all of these different areas that break down. and then, of course, below that you have regime syria, still controlled by president assad with russian backing there, as well. it makes trying to find a resolution here enormously difficult. it is so finely balanced. there are so many different parties at play. they all want different things. and it really makes you feel for the civilian population, who are trying to live, ....

A green light by russia and to an extent by the us. if they both strongly oppose a fresh ground operation, then president erdogan is in trouble. he can t really go ahead on his own. but here is where the geopolitics become even more interesting, because ukraine plays very strongly here. you will remember and we ve talked about it on the programme, john about how turkey has played this important role because they have good relations with the west and they have cordial relations with russia, as well. so very early on in the conflict where there were some talks, they were brokered by turkey and they happened in turkey. and then you rememberjust a few months ago that grain deal which allowed ukrainian grain that was blocked in the ports to be able to come through mine filled waters and safely start to spread around the rest of the world. so turkey has a trump card to play here. and some people wonder whether, as russia and as the west try and keep turkey onside, ....

I think i would prefer to be a ukrainian soldier on the front line at the moment. i wouldn t i d like to be either, by the way, but i d prefer to be a ukrainian soldier on the front line than i would be a russian. more likely to affect the morale of the russians than the ukrainians? ithink so, because, you know, we ve already seen russian morale at a pretty low point. and we know that there are people with very little training being thrown into the front line, and the ukrainians happily talking about meat into the grinder. that s how they view the way russians treat their own troops. the war in ukraine has distracted attention from the war which russia s been fighting to keep the syrian dictator bashar al assad in power. the war there, which has gone on for more than a decade, has turned into a free for all, with various outside powers able to do pretty much what they want. turkey, for instance, is trying to wipe out ....

The kurdish groups which it doesn t like, chief among them the pkk, together with any support for creating a kurdish state. anna foster, the bbc s middle east correspondent, monitors the war from beirut. what you have on the one hand is turkey, and you have president erdogan s desire, he says, to secure the turkish borderfrom kurdish militant groups. in the main, the pkk, the kurdistan workers party. and what they want is a state for these around about 30 million ethnic kurds who have no state to call their own. some of them are in turkey, some of them are in northern syria, northern iraq, and some of them are in western iran. and they are concentrated in these small areas, one of which borders turkey. and so president erdogan says he needs to keep his border secure, but the kurds say that, as he continues to try and push them away, push them south, ....
