DURBAN - MORE than 27 KwaZulu-Natal traditional leaders have been murdered and several others have escaped assassination attempts since 2019.
According to the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Sipho Hlomuka, there was no evidence to suggest the motive for these murders.
The IFP had previously called for a task team to be the established to investigate the killings of izinduna in the province after yet another murder, of induna Prince Hlabisa of Matshamnyama traditional council in the uMkhanyakude District.
The IFP said it believed those behind the killings were possibly after the salaries that were paid once a person became an induna. ....

Traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal are bemoaning a spate of killings that appear to be targeting amakhosi and izinduna in the province.
The latest killing, according to the KwaZulu-Natal House of Traditional Leaders, took place on Saturday.
“Inkosi Manqoba Fred Mkhize, 37, of the Amambuzane traditional council in the uMngeni local municipality, was shot and killed on March 13 2021 by unknown assailants who ambushed him and his aide when they were driving to his home in Mpophomeni,” said chairperson of the provincial House of Traditional Leaders, Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza. ....

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has called for premier Sihle Zikalala to establish a commission of inquiry into the ongoing murders of traditional leaders.
The call comes after Bongumusa Mdluli, who served as chief under the Manyavu Traditional Council in the uMgungundlovu district, was killed by unknown assailants at his home near Cato Ridge, on Sunday.
In a separate incident on the same weekend, Richard Bonginkosi, who served as chief under the Nxamalala sub-clan, was murdered at his home near Howick. ....

Local government MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, has condemned what he says are the ongoing brutal killings of Induna in uMgungundlovu.

It follows two separate murders over this past weekend.
Induna Bongumusa Mdluli who served under the Manyavu Traditional Council was gunned down at his home on Sunday.
Two days earlier - Induna Bonginkosi Dlomo of the Nxamalala sub-Clan was killed in his home near Howick.
Cooperative Governance spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila says there are claims the attacks were over leadership positions.
Hlomuka has called on the affected communities to work with the police towards the apprehension of anyone who could have been involved in these murders. ....

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka said the recent murders of two chiefs has undermined the institution of traditional leaders in the province.
He condemned the murder of Bongumusa Mdluli, who served as chief under the Manyavu Traditional Council in the uMgungundlovu district.
Mdluli was gunned down by unknown assailants at his home near Cato Ridge, outside Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday. ....
