New English wine company sets goal to become top five producer 12 March 2021 By Phoebe French With the recent acquisition of Pookchurch Vineyard giving it a total of 124 acres (50 hectares) under vine, Highweald Wines is aiming to become a top English wine producer by quality and quantity. Speaking to the drinks business, general manager Robin Langton said he was on the hunt for more land with the goal to have 250ha under vine. This would put Highweald among the top five producers by volume, while Langton is also keen to produce top quality wines. Having spent three years as chief operating officer at Sussex-based Ridgeview Wine Estate as well as buying roles at Iceland, Direct Wines and Naked Wines, he is also an experienced winemaker. ....
09 March 2021 By Phoebe French A new book on English wine focusing on two longstanding estates in Sussex, both fronted by women, has been released this week. Sussex by the Glass by wine writer Liz Sagues was released yesterday to coincide with International Women’s Day. The work focuses on two well-established wine estates – Bolney and Ridgeview – which are now headed up by the daughters of their founders, namely Sam Linter and Tamara Roberts. With privileged access to both estates, and featuring interviews with the winemaking team, Sagues’ book explains how and why both wineries were founded and the trials and tribulations along the way. ....

From CEOs and MDs such as Tamara Roberts of Ridgeview and Sam Linter of Bolney to head winemakers including Emma Rice (Hattingley Valley) Corinne Seely (Exton Park) and Cherie Spriggs (Nyetimber), women hold a variety of positions in the industry. Despite this UK vineyards are optimistic, with many reporting an unexpected uplift in tourism and an increase in visitors between lockdowns. Gonzalez Byass’ new Tio Pepe hotel in Jerez In a survey conducted by winetourism.com of 1,203 wineries across 34 countries, 32% reported financial losses of between 50-80% with regard to tourism revenue, with a further 20% reporting losses of more than 80%. Of those surveyed, 58% said they didn’t expect wine tourism to return to pre-covid levels any earlier than 2022. ....
