为了达到这一目标，缺少造车经验、以房地产起家的宝能开始通过“买买买”来补课。 
2017年12月，宝能集团以65亿元的巨资，分别从持股观致汽车各50%的奇瑞汽车和Quantum（2007）LLC手里，购买了25%和26%的股权，累计持有了观致51%的股权。
而随着2019年，宝能再以15.6亿人民币的价格继续从Quantum（2007）LLC手中收购了12%的股份，至此宝能彻底以63%的股权主导观致汽车。从企查查数据可以看到，目前观致汽车最大股东为杭州诚茂投资有限公司，而这家公司隶属于宝能集团。

在收购观致一年后，宝能汽车又盯上了长安PSA(长安标致雪铁龙汽车有限公司)，并以和收购观致汽车同样的手段，相继从长安汽车和雪铁龙手中拿到了50%的股权，去年5月，长安PSA正式变更为深圳市宝能汽车有限公司。
