Chilli Farming in Brahmaputra Basin: Even 15-20 years ago, the grazing areas in the Brahmaputra basin did not produce any cash crops that producers could talk about proudly. Now the sandy land has turned out a boon for farmers as they have gone for growing chillies as the first cash crop of the vast shoal area.
In a mere half an hour, the Jamuna devoured the homes, croplands, and belongings of some 30 families in Ichamara village of Bogura’s Sariakandi. Powerless to do anything, the families watched in horror as everything they owned was swept away, leaving them with nothing.
Sudden flooding in the northern and northeastern regions over the last five days has inundated a large portion of arable lands, leaving thousands of farmers in dismay.
