GPICA President Helen Fox will present an overview of the June public information session on the Publix plaza and proposed 94 townhome development; she’ll discuss the Lee County rule that residents may not contact commissioners regarding zoning objections and outline previous attempts to limit development using the 810/910 rule.
Noel Andress, a Bokeelia resident and expert in Florida development who has served on the boards of the Lee County Local Planning Agency, the Southwest Florida Watershed Council and the Lee County Airport Special Management Committee, will provide an overview of how the development process works and how residents can get involved. ....

GPICA welcomes national estuary program speaker

New board elected officers for 2021 were announced at the March 2 meeting of the Greater Pine Island Civic Association, as well as ongoing discussions from the survey intended to prioritize issues for islanders.
The officers are Helen Fox, president; Nadine Slimak, vice president; Scott Wilkinson, recording secretary; and Mike Sweeney, treasurer.
“My aim as president is to work with the community on issues that you all have identified as most important to Greater Pine Island residents,” said Fox.
According to survey responses, the most important issues are water quality, traffic, over-development and road and waterway safety. These survey results, said Fox, were sent to Lee County Commissioner Kevin Ruane in an effort to partner with him on tackling some of the issues. ....

Ronald George Lueth, US Navy Retired, died from complications of the Coronavirus on January 5, 2021. A shattered femur kept him in a rehabilitation facility for 106 days. Finally ready for discharge, he instead contracted the virus from a staff member and died at Cape Coral Hospital Covid ICU.
Born in Itasca, Illinois, Ron was the first child of Ellen (Hoppensteadt) and Alvin Lueth. He attended St. Luke’s elementary school and Lake Park High School. After graduation in 1960, Ron enlisted in the US Navy where he had an exemplary 20-year career.
His penchant for organization, strategic thinking, planning and concise reporting soon brought him to the attention of Naval Intelligence. He was assigned to Guantanimo Bay, Cuba, and later to Pearl Harbor Hawaii, where he joined the Flag Administration Unit CINCPACFLT as a Soviet Naval Analyst. In October, 1972, he joined the USS Kitty Hawk while She was on duty conducting missions along the coast of Viet Nam. ....
