FAU honors 9 who died in 1944 World War II air-training crash in Boca


BOCA RATON  A generation before Florida Atlantic University opened its main campus in Boca Raton in 1964, students of another sort studied and trained there. 
During World War II, thousands of soldiers in the Army Air Corps’ only airborne radar training facility, Boca Raton Army Air Field, occupied what is now the sprawling university campus and a portion of the city’s airport. 
On Thursday, a historical marker was unveiled in memory of nine men who died on a routine training mission when their aircraft crashed during takeoff on the future site of the campus. 
“These people made some of the great advances in radar detection … and the story is just beginning to be told,” said FAU President John Kelly following Thursday’s dedication of the historic marker. Boca Raton election: Incumbents Drucker, Mayotte coast to easy wins


BOCA RATON Voters returned two incumbents to the Boca Raton City Council by comfortable margins Tuesday night.
In the Seat C contest, Yvette Drucker bested Constance Scott and two other candidates. She got a bit more than 50 percent of the vote, with all precincts reporting.
Drucker was appointed over 31 other candidates in October to fill the remainder of Jeremy Rodgers’ term after he went overseas on a military deployment.
Drucker is a longtime community volunteer who has served on the boards of organizations such as the Boca Raton Children’s Museum and the Boca Raton Historical Society. She also was chair of the Boca Raton Education Task Force. She stressed in her campaign her ability to work collaboratively with other council members. ....
