Fisherfolk in Zambales have been losing about 70 percent of their income per fishing trip since last year as their traditional fishing grounds have narrowed amid the continued presence of Chinese vessels in the area, a militant fishers’ group said Thursday, May 27.

Bobby Roldan, vice chair for Luzon of the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA), said in a statement on Thursday that the average income of a small fisherman has fallen to P300 from P1,000 per fishing trip. Mr. Roldan said these fishermen are no longer able to go near Scarborough Shoal for fear of being harassed or aggressively driven away by Chinese vessels patroling the area.  ....

In his weekly Talk to the Nation, Duterte said he was just joking when he made a promise in the 2016 elections that he will ride a jet ski to go to Spratlys Island and tell China that the West Philippine Sea belonged to the Philippines. Duterte was answering the query of fisherman Carlo Montehermozo when he made the promise back in 2016. ....

The group explained that the 80 percent of the production cost of fisherfolk goes to fuel consumption alone. “We assert by rights a government support in a form of economic aid and livelihood subsidy,” Bobby Roldan, Pamalakaya vice chairman for Luzon, said in a statement. “It should not be less than P10, 000 for each of the poor fishing family who is reeling from the devastating impacts of the pandemic and the strict quarantine,” he added. ....
