밭에서 청양고추를 한주먹 땄다. 적당히 매운맛을 품고 있는 이맘때가 먹기 딱 좋다. 된장 찍어 두 끼 정도 먹고 나니 뭔가 빠진 것 같은 허전함이 자꾸 밀려온다. 그런데 나는 그 허전함을 고추를 딸 때부터 이미 알고 있었다.
바로 황석어 젓갈을 먹는 일이다. 황석어 젓갈은 청양고추 송송 썰어 함께 얹어 먹어야 비로소 맛의 궁합을 이룬다. 물론 양파는 덤이다. 다른 때는 생각도 나지 않던 이 음식이 초여름에 접어들면 저절로 떠오르는 데는 그만한 이유가 있다.
장마가 막 지나고 불볕 쏟아질 무렵엔 너나없이 기운이 빠지고 갑자기 다가드는 더위에 맥을 못 춘다. 입맛도 없는 것 같고 왠지 밥에 물 말아 대충 먹고 싶어지는 때, 그런 때가 요즘이다. 풋고추와 양파만으로 밥 한 그릇 대충 비우고 싶은 나른한 여름 ....
