School Board Reviews $25M Relief Spending Plan


More than $25 million in federal coronavirus relief funding to Moore County Schools will cover wide-ranging expenses over the next three years: from activity buses and teacher assistants to new running tracks at Pinecrest and North Moore high schools.
Administrators told the school board on Tuesday that those needs and many others intersect with the directive to spend that money on preventing the transmission of COVID-19 and recovering from the pandemic’s effects over the last year.
The district has until May 7 to apply to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction with an outline of how it plans to use its coronavirus relief funds. The Moore County Board of Education got its first view of the proposed plan in a special meeting this week. ....

Commissioners Consider Schools Budget


The Moore County Board of Commissioners reviewed a proposed new framework for school funding on Tuesday that would allocate a per-pupil calculation for the upcoming fiscal year.
The $32.5 million local budget request covers the associated costs with projected enrollment growth in the district and in charter schools, plus $1.1 million to fund a new salary scale for supporting staff.
“It is time to provide full and certain funding for every child whether they sit in our classrooms or log in from home,” said Board of Education Chair Libby Carter. “It seeks to maintain our programs and staff that make our school system one of the finest in the state. It seeks to maintain (current funding levels), it does not seek to add.” ....
