An opinion piece by Gympie Regional councillor Dolly Jensen Quote: Here’s to strong women; may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. As International Women’s Day gets closer, I look back with a small smile of satisfaction when I see how far we have come. But then, with a little trepidation, I look ahead and see how far we still have to go. We’re getting there, slowly. Really slowly. Just recently, I signed up for a nine month course through LGAQ called “Women Leading in Local Government” so if you were wondering how we of the fairer sex are going in local politics, this pretty much says it all. But at least my welcoming letter was signed by a bloke called Gary. ....
Southside residents hoping to be hooked up to the city s sewerage network will be waiting until at least 2022 or longer for work to resume, if it ever does. Gympie regional councillors said they will focus on communication with residents affected by delays to the scheme following more extensive discussion about how to foot the expected $15 million bill to deliver the final nine stages of the 16-stage project. The project was scheduled to be finished in 2026. It has been stalled since 2018 amid questions over whether landholders being connected should pick up part of the costs, or if the service should be entirely covered by the council - 2018 and 19 s works were supposed to be in the areas around the Power Rd/Groundwater Rd/Mary Valley Rd, and between Groundwater Rd and Sorensen Rd. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only The official welcome of Proud Mary at its new home in Imbil Rail Park was an exciting event for volunteers and locals who gathered on Saturday afternoon. Project Manager and head volunteer Jimmy Budgen broke a bottle of champagne with Councillor Bob Fredman and Mayor Glen Hartwig to commemorate the train’s arrival. “The feeling was of euphoria, it really lifted the town atmosphere,” Mr Budgen said. After nine months of hard work, Mr Budgen said seeing parents bring their children to look at and touch the old icon was “heartwarming”. “The Imbil Rail Park will add to the town centre public space for people to enjoy,” he said. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only History was made during the week when the Proud Mary steam train was moved from the Gympie Station to the Rail Park in Imbil. The moment the train was lifted on to the tracks by a crane marked a special moment for the town, with the hopes it will become another tourist attraction for the Mary Valley. Division 8 Councillor Bob Fredman first brought the idea to the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce a year ago, after he accepted a live train would never come back to Imbil. âThey were very strong in their support for the concept so I met with the general manager of the Rattler, he took it on board, then a local group was formed in Imbil and they ve taken it from there,â Mr Fredman said. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only GYMPIE region councillors and staff have come under attack on social media over a controversial decision to repeal environment protection laws, with an inflammatory post by ex-councillor Dr Daryl Dodt going further than any other post. In the lead-up to and during debate on the laws, Facebook users fired away at those involved in the discussion with accusations of falsities and questions of integrity. A post on a Facebook page apparently run by Gympie GP and former councillor Daryl Dodt before the meeting yesterday pre-emptively took aim at those who would vote to overturn the laws introduced in February this year. ....
