President Joe Biden became the first US president to formally refer to atrocities committed against Armenians as a “genocide” on Saturday, 106 years after the 1915 start of an eight-year-long campaign of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Ottoman Empire that left between 1 and 1.5 million Armenians dead.
Previous presidents have refrained from using the word “genocide” in connection with the mass atrocities committed against the Armenian people in the early 20th century, and Turkey categorically denies that a genocide took place. Lifelong public servant, former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, announced on Thursday he will undergo treatment for his recent diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer.
In a statement released by the 1996 Republican Nominee for President, he said, “While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own.
Serving two non-consecutive terms as Senate Majority Leader, Dole was a staple of the Republican Party during his four-decade career on Capitol Hill. He was first elected to federal office in 1961 representing Kansas as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, before making the leap to the Senate in 1969, where he remained until 1996, retiring to focus on his presidential run. ....
