Crackdown on illegal fishing gears in Lake Victoria looms

MIGORI, KENYA: Migori Security committee has launched a crackdown on fishermen using illegal fishing nets in Lake Victoria, as cartels supporting fishermen with the gears put on notice.
The county security committee led by Migori County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich said they were going to mount operations to contain the illegal fishing activity.
According to the county commissioner, the team has already deliberated on how it is going to manage the situation.
While cautioning the fishermen, the commissioner said the use of illegal fishing gears in the lake was being made possible by some cartels who pretended to be dealing in the fish trade. He claimed the cartels were supporting the fishermen by supplying them with illegal nets. ....

Govt Explains Schools Teaching Students From Tanzania

The government has explained why students from Tanzania have been spotted crossing the border at Isebania town into Kenya to learn at Nyamaharaga Primary School.
During a press briefing, County Director of Education Elizabeth Otieno said that the students were Kenyans who live across the border in Tanzania.
“These are Kenyan nationals whose parents live across the border and therefore have the right to learn in Kenyan schools,” she stated.

Otieno s sentiments were backed by Migori County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich who also maintained that there were no children from Tanzania who were learning in Kenyan schools. ....

10,000 learners leave private academies for public schools

Some 10,000 learners have left private academies for public schools, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said.
At the same time, Prof Magoha has defended learning under trees, saying the government has done all it can within the circumstances to fund schools ahead of reopening.
Magoha said Kenya had more classrooms compared to neighbouring countries, in an apparent reference to comparisons that Rwanda had constructed 22,000 classrooms ahead of schools opening, generating anger on social media after images of pupils learning under trees circulated. ....
