Coming off a sweep of Tri-County Thursday night, Twin Cedars repeated that effort Friday against Orient-Macksburg on the road. The Sabers girls won 52-45 in overtime and the boys came out on top 46-32. In the first half of the double header, Twin Cedars’ Brooke Roby went off for 29 points and 10 rebounds. Cheyanne Bruns added another 13, including three shots from beyond the arc. This was the Sabers’ fifth game in seven days, and they went 5-0 in them to improve to 9-6. Head Coach Trent Verwers praised his girls for keeping their composure after a subpar defensive performance that saw their wire to wire lead vanish in the closing moments of regulation. ....
The wait is finally over. Twin Cedars basketball is back in business. The Sabers, after missing two weeks following a positive COVID-19 test, will be back in action today as they head to Ankeny Christian for a Bluegrass Conference double header. The Saber girls will go up against a winless Eagles team while the TC boys face an ACA squad that is currently undefeated in league play. Boys Head Coach Blake McWilliams says that the hardest thing to do after getting back to practice was getting his players back into game shape. “It’s good to get back in the gym. It’s good to get some shots up. Try to get them back in shape a little bit. Two weeks off can really take a toll on you, especially when you’re in the middle of a season. Our conditioning had been pretty good, and then taking two weeks off, you almost have to start getting it going again. So that’s how we’ve attacked it so far.” ....
The Twin Cedars basketball teams will be on hold for another week before returning to the hardwood following a player’s positive COVID-19 test, but that’s not going to be an excuse for when that time comes. Boys Head Coach Blake McWilliams says that he definitely feels for his players, but that might be extra motivation for the time they finally get back to game action. “I kinda feel bad for the boys. They were really looking forward to that second half of the season. We’ll still get to play some games. I think so. We just have to put it on hold for a little bit.” ....
Most high school basketball teams want to play up tempo, let’s face it, it is more fun and points hopefully come in large amounts. The Twin Cedars Boys Basketball Squad wants to go quickly, but Coach Blake McWilliams tells KRLS Sports finding the line between turning it up and running the offense is something that his team is still trying to figure out. McWilliams: “Trying to talk about pushing it but if nothing is there taking it out and running the offense and not settling for the 3 pointer but getting a lay up of some other easier shot especially when things aren’t going as well as they need to.” ....
The Twin Cedars Boys Basketball Squad will head into the break with a little bit of momentum after defeating Southeast Warren on Friday. The Sabers still have some work to do to get to where they want to be at the end of the season. Coach Blake McWilliams tells KRLS Sports one of the points of emphasis during the break will be better play on the defensive end. McWilliams: “We talked about that, I think we’ve been a little lazy on the defensive side of the floor. We need to be better at putting more pressure on the ball and getting some turnovers ourselves.” ....
