DALLAS (AP) Carolina captain Jordan Staal was in the right spot twice to score power-play goals and the Central Division-leading Hurricanes beat the playoff-chasing Dallas Stars 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Sebastian Aho had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes while Andrei Svechnikov, who they got with the second overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft held in the same building, had a career-high three assists.
Jason Robertson had his 15th goal for Dallas to extend his point streak to nine games, breaking a tie with Jamie Langenbrunner (1996-97) for the longest by a rookie in Stars history. It is also the longest by any NHL rookie this season. ....

The trade deadline may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be any more trades over the courses of the remainder of the league year. The NHL Expansion Draft is right around the corner, with protection lists due on July 17, ahead of the draft on July 21.
By that time, all 30 participating teams must be able to submit a protection list that complies with the exposure requirements of the draft. As a reminder, teams may protect seven forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie or eight skaters and a goalie. However, they must also expose two forwards and one defenseman signed beyond this season and who have played in 27 NHL games this season or 54 games over the past two seasons, as well as a goaltender under team control beyond this season. ....

The Dallas Stars don’t have many games playing this system in which the outcome is known fairly early into the third period. That’s what happens when you play a lot of one-goal games and have a tendency to lock down leads instead of adding to them in tight contests.
Tonight’s game was one of those rare moments where the outcome wasn’t really in doubt. With the personnel they were missing, that’s even more of a positive. Roope Hintz missed the game with his usual lower-body injury he’s been playing through; playing in back-to-back games when the team is playing four games in seven nights for six plus weeks straight makes that a no-brainer if the team wants to have him in the lineup more often than not. ....
