A London librarian and campaign worker in the last municipal election is defending himself against a civil lawsuit launched by a former city councillor who was the subject of an attack website.
Barry Phillips, a high school librarian who helped with Ward 10 Coun. Paul Van Meerbergen’s 2018 election campaign, has filed a statement of defence that claims he was not responsible for the Blackridge Strategy website that took aim at Virginia Ridley.

A defamation lawsuit launched by former city councillor Virgina Ridley highlights a broader need to crack down on political “cheap shots” that erode public trust, one observer says.
Ridley is suing a political consulting firm that admitted to creating an attack website about her during the 2018 civic election campaign, and four people she alleges were involved, seeking $400,000 and other damages for what her statement of claim describes as a “lingering and enduring impact.”
