Based in London and named after an Egyptian pharaoh, the 37-year-old multi-reedist has made waves with three bands, all of which are signed to the Impulse record label: Shabaka And The Ancestors, The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet. In the 2020 DownBeat Critics Poll, Hutchings topped the category Rising Star Jazz Artist of the Year, and Shabaka And The Ancestors won the category Rising Star Jazz Group. Those accolades are the latest evidence that fans far beyond the U.K. are championing his artistic output. ....

The physical re-releases which were announced with the news that My Bloody Valentine had signed with Domino Records and made their music available on digital streaming services for the first time back in March have proved popular at the UK’s independent record shops this week. The band’s enduring 1991 effort Loveless leads the way, with Isn’t Anything at #5, MBV at #7 and the rarities and EPs collection at #15. Elsewhere, Gruff Rhys enters at #2 with his new solo album Seeking New Gods, and after gaining some ground aheadof its full release yesterday, black midi’s second LP Cavalcade begins life at #16. ....

Squid drop to #5 from the number one spot last week, while there’s another strong showing from Dry The Cleaning who climb again with New Long Leg. It’s now nine years since The Official Charts Company launched this chart as vinyl sales surged during the last decade, a trend which continued in 2020 as the format grew for the 13th consecutive year. It is compiled from the best selling albums at 100 of Britain’s leading independent music shops. ....
