(Natural News)
A study published in the journal
Environmental Health Perspectives shows that chemicals commonly found in plastics can increase diabetes risk. French and Australian researchers found that exposure to high levels of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) is associated with a two times-higher risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Exposure to plastic chemicals increases diabetes risk
BPA is used in disposable water bottles, takeaway containers and toys, while BPS is commonly used as a substitute for BPA. Low-level exposure to these chemicals comes from eating food or drinking water stored in containers made of them. ....

Items at a natural products store for children are marked as free of bisphenol A. California will broaden its warning labels.Brant Ward / The Chronicle 2011
California will broaden its warning labels for bisphenol A, a chemical widely used in plastic cups and other food and drink containers, after the state Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the chemical industry Wednesday.
Since 2015, the state has required labels on products containing bisphenol A stating that it can cause reproductive harm in women. The court order upholds state health officials’ decision to require additional warnings of “developmental toxicity,” or harm to fetuses and newborn and young children whose mothers are exposed to the chemical during pregnancy. ....

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, according to research. Data analysed by the charity Prostate Cancer UK shows it has overtaken breast cancer to be the most commonly diagnosed form of the disease, with 57,192 new cases in 2018 – the most recent figures available. Worryingly many have attributed a type of plastic which could increase a person’s risk of developing the deadly disease. Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a common building block in resins and some types of plastic and is said to increase a person’s risk of prostate cancer. ....

Mussels, oysters have highest levels of microplastic contamination among seafood

Published in the journal
Environmental Health Perspectives, the study takes a look at the impact of the global microplastic pollution problem not just on the world’s oceans but also on human health.
Experts still do not fully understand the effects of microplastics on the human body. But according to Evangelos Danopoulos, the study’s lead author and a postgraduate student at Hull York Medical School, quantifying the amount of microplastics humans are ingesting is a critical step to understanding this.
Microplastic contamination highest in mollusks
For their research, Danopoulos and his colleagues studied more than 50 reports on microplastic contamination in both fish and shellfish between 2014 and 2020. Their data showed that microplastic content was zero to 10.5 microplastics per gram (MPs/g) in mollusks, 0.1–8.6 MPs/g in crustaceans and zero to 2.9 MPs/g in fish. ....
