A Moravian Church bishop in Tanzania maintains that his plans to campaign for a new national constitution and independent electoral commission are still on track despite his arrest by the police.
Bishop Emmaus Mwamakula was arrested at his Dar es Salaam home on February 15, hours ahead of the first scheduled demos on Tuesday. He was released on bail on Tuesday evening with an order to report to the Central Police station on Friday morning.
He was released after police conducted a search at his house.
The Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander, Mr Lazaro Mambosasa, toldÂ
The Citizen on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, that Mr Mwamakula was released after police had conducted a search at his house.
âWe have decided to ignore him. We conducted a search at his house. He also met the bond requirements and therefore, we decided to release him,â he said.
Mr Mwamakula found himself in the bad books of the law enforcers after he allegedly posted on a social media platform, asking people to take part in a demonstration to compel the government to enact a New Republican Constitution.

Bishop Emmaus Mwamakula of Uamsho Moravian Church in Tanzania has been arrested and detained by security operatives for inciting civil disorder via social media.
“Beloved Tanzanians, I, Bishop Mwamakula, has been picked from my home by people who are not in uniform. They have brought me to the office of the Kinondoni Regional Police Commander. Our Lamb has conquered. Let us follow Him,” Bishop Mwamakula said in a post via a social media platform on Monday.
Reports say Lazaro Mambosasa, the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Commander, has confirmed the arrest.
Mambosasa said law enforcers were indeed holding Bishop Mwamakula for questioning over a post in which he is alleged to have incited people into taking part in an illegal demonstration to demand the government to enact a new Republican Constitution.
