How are things looking now? yeah. well, as far as the wildlife. that tugged at everyone s heart strings. when we saw the original pictures of the oiled birds, the enormity of the situation hit home and to some extent people were really bracing for the worst. we got a lot of that, but in the last six months, i can tell you this, after returning back to the gulf, we have certainly come a long, long way. reporter: i first visited bird rehab centers back in mid-june. there was frantic shuffling of rescued pelicans, cleaning oiled feathers, treating the sick and feeding the weak. it s a different scene now. over 800 birds moved through this facility and were treated from louisiana to florida during the last six months. the fact that it s empty is a huge sign of success, and it makes us very happy. so this is where the birds ....

And the last six months, i can tell you this, we ve come a long, long way. i first visited bird rehab centers back in mid-june. there was frantic shuffling of rescued pelicans. cleaning oiled feathers, medically treating the sick, and feeding the weak. it s a different scene now. it already smells better in here. over 800 rescue birds moved through this facility and more than 2,000 were treated from louisiana to florida during the last six months. the fact that it s empty is a huge sign of success. and makes us very happy. so this is where there were this morning. the birds were released out of here. reporter: that s huge. the last of the bp-affected birds finally return to the wild. when they go out and i see them fly out of those kennels, that s when you see me smile. that s when i m happiest. reporter: i know the feeling. four months ago i got to release some pelicans in texas. ....
