Author, historian and state representative Dean Urdahl will unveil his most recent film, "Assault on Fort Ridgely," based on his 2008 book, "Uprising," April 23-25 at the Hollywood Theater in Litchfield.
Henry Mills held on to the shirt that saved his life for the rest of his long life.
It was a dead man s shirt. Likely wrestled off a fallen Confederate soldier on an icy Nashville battlefield in the bitter December of 1864. Mills took the shirt and wrapped it tight around the bleeding bullet wound in his leg.
He lost the leg but kept the shirt. It came home with him to Minnesota first to Fort Snelling, where Lt. Henry L. Mills mustered out of the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, then home to St. Paul.
No matter how many times the Mills family washed the battered shirt, the bloodstains remained. But instead of burning the thing or cutting it into rags so he wouldn t be reminded of the pain and fear of those days, Mills carried this piece of his past into the future.
MNHS is working on plans to open the Alexander Ramsey House, Folsom House, Harkin Store, Lower Sioux Agency, Mill City Museum and Minnehaha Depot, a release said.
According to the release, the historical society is prepared to offer self-guided tours at the State Capitol as soon as the Minnesota Department of Administration reopens the building.
The Minnesota History Center, Split Rock Lighthouse, the Trading Post at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum, and outdoor trail sites, including Birch Coulee Battlefield, Fort Ridgely, Marine Mill and Traverse des Sioux, are currently open.
Beginning May 27, tickets can be purchased online or by calling 651-259-3015. A limited number of tickets will be available for walk-ups, and MNHS is limiting the number of daily visitors at sites.
