Armstrongs quarry expansion plans near Rivington 'rejected'

The plans have already received 48 letters of objection from members of the public with Horwich Town Council now also objecting to the plans.
Horwich North East councillor, Richard Silvester, said before the meeting: “The application site is within green belt, the Winter Hill and Smithills Moor Site of Biological Importance and the Upland Moorland Hills Landscape Character Area and either within or adjacent to the newly created West Pennine Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest.
“I believe the application to extend the area of the quarry into open green belt land will not preserve the openness of the green belt as it will take away the existing openness of the land within the area proposed to be extracted. ....

Reedbed removal row for popular Bury reservoir

SORRY: Birdwatchers take a final look at the reedbed at Elton Reservoir
A ROW has broken out over maintenance work at Elton Reservoir after nature lovers claimed it was destroying a valuable reedbed.
Dredging is due to take place at the beauty spot this month but the Elton Reservoir Basin Countryside Warden Service (ERBCWS) has raised concerns about the work saying it will lead to untreated sewage waste flowing into the basin as well as removing an important habitat for a number of birds.
Tom O’Shea, of the ERBCWS, said: “This small section of reedbed serves as pollution control for the reservoir, as well as serving as a habitat for kingfishers, herons and egrets, which provide great value for the public who come from all over Bury to watch the animals that visit. ....
