BMW Team RLL finishes on the podium at Daytona 24-Hour race

BMW Team RLL headed into Daytona hoping for a third, consecutive, win at the traditional 24-hour endurance race. After posting incredible results in 2020 and 2019, the BMW M8 GTE claimed only a podium finish this time around, with the number 24 car crossing the finish line third at the end. The number 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE car wasn’t too far behind either, crossing the finish line in fifth.
This was the first race of the season in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. As you might be aware already, BMW announced it will only be competing in four races this season, focusing on endurance events for a change. The start is promising, even though it could’ve been better for BMW. The third-placed car in the GTLM standings was driven by Augusto Farfus, John Edwards, Jesse Krohn and Marco Wittmann. ....

Sandbagging Accusations Fly Following Qualifying for Rolex 24 at Daytona
IMSA s qualifying race did little to stop the finger-pointing at Daytona.

Organizers of the Rolex 24 at Daytona offered championship points and a 100-minute qualifying race in an effort to combat sandbagging for this year s 24.
At least one driver felt that teams were still holding back during qualifying, fearing the wrath of Balance of Performance police.
Should one brand of car go too fast in qualifying, IMSA reserves right to reach into its BoP toolbox and penalize the entire brand for the 24.
First, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship relied on teams’ ability to Do The Right Thing. Then they made rules to prevent it. Then they upped the technology to detect it. Nothing worked. So Sunday, IMSA had a qualifying race, setting the field for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. ....

Relegated to a sixth-place starting position after their No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi V.R failed technical inspection Saturday night for being underweight, the duo rallied to win the inaugural Motul Pole Award 100, which determined the starting order for next weekend’s 59th Rolex 24 At Daytona. ....

Action Express gives Chase Elliott a Rolex 24 milestone

Action Express Racing put one of its two Cadillacs the one featuring NASCAR champion Chase Ellott on the pole for the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a first-of-its-kind qualifying race for the crown jewel endurance event.
The No. 31 Cadillac DPi will be driven next week in the twice-round-the-clock race by Felipe Nasr, Pipo Derani, Mike Conway and Elliott in Elliott s IMSA sports car debut.
He didn t race the car in Sunday s qualifier, which awarded 35 points to the pole-winning team. Action Express used fulltime regular drivers Nasr and Derani for the 140-minute qualifier around the winding Daytona International Speedway road course and snagged the Rolex 24 pole. ....
